Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to share important information about an exciting enhancement to student safety, efficiency, and daily operations across Cherokee County School District: the introduction of RFID-enabled student identification badges. Beginning as early as this week, every student will receive a durable RFID badge. These badges will serve as a secure, convenient tool for several key daily activities, starting with bus transportation, cafeteria service, and media center use. The system is designed to streamline processes while giving staff real-time information that helps us better support and protect every student.
Bus Transportation – Scanning On and Off
Students will scan their badge when boarding and exiting the bus. This provides an accurate, real-time record of who is on each bus. In the event of a delay, route change, or emergency, transportation staff and school administrators can quickly confirm a student’s presence and location.
Cafeteria – Faster, More Accurate Meal Service
At lunch (and breakfast where applicable), students will simply scan their badge instead of entering a PIN or using a paper ticket. This speeds up serving lines, reduces errors in meal counts, and helps ensure accurate records for free and reduced-price meal programs while maintaining student privacy. Shorter lines mean more time for students to eat and socialize.
Media Center – Efficient Check-Out and Resource Tracking
In the media center, scanning the badge will allow quick and accurate checkout and return of books and other materials. Staff can more easily manage inventory, send timely reminders about due dates, and help students develop responsibility for shared resources.
These are the initial uses. As the system is fully implemented, we may expand its application to other areas such as attendance verification, building access, or activity participation where it adds clear value for safety and efficiency.
We ask that students treat their RFID badge with care—similar to a student ID card. Replacement badges will be available through the school office for $5 should one become lost or damaged. We believe this technology will make our schools safer, our daily routines smoother, and our support for students more effective. If you have questions about the RFID badge program, distribution timeline, or how the system works at your child’s school, please contact your school’s main office.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting the success and well-being of every CCSD student.
